In the last week’s session ‘Job workshop’, I have a better understanding of job preparation and application. To apply for a job, we need to know many things before application, such as my advantages, my developing direction, the information about the company and so on. In our group work, we discussed a template of application letters, and it can be changed when we apply to different kinds of jobs.

(application letter template. Done by Dorin, Mia, Lily, Nicole, Roy)

All the things I learned in this session are very important. It reminds me of my first experience of an internship job interview last year. I prepared the portfolio and personal resume. At the beginning of the interview, the interviewer asked me to introduce two projects in my portfolio and she asked me some relevant questions. After that, she asked me whether I have some questions to ask. I was in a hurry and said ‘no’. Now, I have understood the reasons why I didn’t have a good performance in the interview. I didn’t practice answering possible interview questions or prepare my own questions about the job and the firm. It’s important to be self-confident and unafraid to make my expectations known.

After our group’s presentation about the theme ‘develop or control’. I did a research to find some information about the urban planning legal system and planning system in mainland China.

(1) The basic concept of urban planning legal system

1. Laws and regulations -- national and local (provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, cities with legislative power) laws and regulations system. Local regulations must be based on national laws and regulations.

2. Technical regulations -- national or local professional standards and norms, divided into national standards and industry standards.

(2) The basic concept of the urban planning system

The urban planning system consists of the following three levels of planning.

1. Urban system planning -- five types: national, provincial (autonomous region), cross-administrative region, city and county.

2. The general planning of the city -- the general planning outline and the general plan, Zoning planning, Special planning.

3. Detailed planning -- detailed planning of control and construction.

I looked through the tender announcement for a Chinese project located in Shenzhen. The ‘INTERNATIONAL TENDER FOR ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN OF SHENZHEN MANGROVE WETLAND MUSEUM’ was published by Guangdong NeiLingding Futian national nature reserve administration. They used open tendering method (prequalification + formal tendering)

There are three stages of this tendering:

Stage 1.

-Publish the tender announcement.

-Registration units submit the registration documents and concept proposal.

-Prequalification.

Select 10 shortlisted units and two ranked alternative units

Stage 2.

-10 shortlisted companies will participate in the formal bidding and submit the design achievement documents within the specified time.

-Tenderers defend.

-Three unsorted bid-winning candidate units were selected to enter the calibration process

Stage 3.

-Select a winner to sign the design contract

Except for that, I also found other thing about tender. Good performance in the tender process is very important for a company. So, I went through the recruitment information published on the webpage and I found some companies have a position for tender specialist. I saw a recruitment news published by Turenscape years ago to find a tender specialist. It has following requirements.

-Two years' experience in large-scale garden or civil engineering settlement, with budget officer certificate and cost engineer qualification is preferred;

-Familiar with engineering bidding, cost, quota system and engineering valuation system, and understand professional design and construction specifications;

-Adapt to short-term business trips.

After reading the course material ‘WHERE DO YOU WORK?’, I have an overall understanding of the types of employment. Since I want to work in mainland China after graduation. I went to ‘gooood’, the most popular and influential architecture, landscape, design and art online magazine and community in China, to find some Recruitment information.

Basically, a brief introduction of the company. Each positions in different companies have a description of the position firstly. Then, it lists the requirements related to the experience, skills, team working ability and so on. Lastly, some information about applying methods in detail.

One thing I found commonly in these news that most of the published positions requirement at least one-year relating working experience. This is no friendly to the new graduates.

Except for some regular positions. I found something new. A company in Hangzhou provides a position named ‘Smart landscape R&D Designer’. Here is the screen shot of the recruitment information.
